Equality – Original Painted Sign
More than just a beautifully painted sign, EQUALITY reflects one of Joby’s core beliefs while also showcasing the subtle design decisions that make traditional signwriting so effective.
Hand-painted on aluminium, this piece demonstrates the difference between an arch and an arc, with each letter carefully angled towards the centre point of the curve. It’s also a wonderful example of balancing letter spacing, where wider letters on the left naturally occupy more room, while those on the right are skilfully overlapped or nestled closer together to create a composition that feels perfectly balanced.
The lettering is painted in a classic thick-and-thin black, with a vibrant stepped-away cast shadow in transparent fairground colours, creating the illusion that the letters are floating above the surface. Set against a softly blended light green background and finished with a crisp dark green border, the result is both bold and elegant.
As with every original piece from Joby’s workshop, this sign has been painted entirely by hand using traditional signwriting techniques, making it a genuine one-off that celebrates both craftsmanship and a message worth displaying.
