Join us on Sunday 17 December for a day celebrating all things signwriting related!
Joby has always been keen to encourage more people to have an interest in the craft of traditional signwriting: the more that learn or value it, the more likely the skills will be passed down to future generations. He is an advocate for the traditional methods of signwriting, which means no masking tape for straight lines, no vinyls to cover surfaces and no airbrushing. While there are now many professional signwriters and those that enjoy it as a hobby, Joby is aware that there are many that have an interest in the art, but might not yet be ready to join a weeklong traditional signwriting course with him, or perhaps they appreciate the art form, even if they don’t want to pick up a brush themselves.
With that in mind, Joby will be hosting a special signwriting open day at his restoration workshops in Maidenhead and all are welcome.
Signwriting Sunday: 17 December 2023
This new event is an ‘open house’ type event where you can come and see all of the different hand painted signs on the walls of the workshops and you’ll be able to watch signwriting demonstrations from Joby and Aaron Stephens. The event is an ideal opportunity to ask questions about signwriting and traditional decorative skills.
Whether you’re intrigued by the art and are wondering if you have what it takes to be able to signwrite, or you are a graphic designer with a love of letterforms, the open day will provide lots of inspiration. If you have created a piece of signwriting and would like some feedback or would like advice about anything signwriting related, the open day is the place to be!
The workshops will be open from 10-5pm, you can drop in and stay for a cuppa or as long as you want.
Past students form Joby’s course are very welcome to attend.
Visit the signwriting gift shop
Tucked away next Joby’s paintshop is his signwriting shop which features a range of signwriting supplies alongside a range of wall art and gifts featuring his lettering designs. This shop is not usually open to the public and is usually for Joby;s signwriting students to visit when they attend the course. On the Open Day we will be bringing the range out into the workshops for you to see first hand what catches your eye. Many of these prints, posters, mugs and magnets make unique gifts for a loved one.
Both of Joby’s popular signwriting books will be available on the day and he will be signing books too. Joby’s fine art prints and the limited edition hand painted alphabet letters from the book will also be available to buy. And remember, these are not available on Amazon or other websites: a great way to #supportlocal.
There will also be refreshments available.
