About this workshop

Fileteado is a traditional decorative style from Buenos Airies, Argentina which was declared a World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 2015.

It began as a simple decoration on the trade carts in the early 20th century and as it expanded to the decoration of buses and trucks in the 1920s and 1930s its imagery grew more complex. Today it can be found all over the city of Buenos Aires, in shop windows, murals and signs with designs featuring visual symbols and the incorporation of short text, including popular and humorous sayings.

Joby has long been a fan of this style of decorative art and has invited Gustavo Ferrari, a signpainter, visual artist and a historian based in Buenos Aires, Argentina to host a guest workshop at Joby’s workshop in Somerset.

Gustavo is a leading expert in Fileteado and his artworks can be found all over the city: he has painted signboards, shop windows of the traditional restaurants, Remarkable Bars, barbers and tattoo shops.

In this special 2-day guest workshop you’ll gain first-hand experience of the complete technique of Fileteado including  its history and the drawing techniques of its classical elements which include flowers, ribbons and acanthus leaves.

During the course Gustavo will guide you through the structural step by step approach of a work from a pounced pattern to the flat colours, then shadows, lights and highlights to enable you to paint a complete sign using acrylic paints and special Fileteado brushes.

This course is suitable for anyone interested in traditional decorative arts, with or without previous experience.

You can see more examples on Gustavo’s Instagram: @ferrarifileteados
