In this blog we’ve rounded up of some of our most popular items from Joby Carter for anyone with a love of letters. Whether you have an interest in typography and graphic design or aspire to try signwriting yourself, there’s plenty to choose from.
Signwriting books packed full of inspiration
Above: Signwriting tips, tricks and inspiration.
Our top picks are Joby’s books: Signwriting Tips Tricks & Inspiration and All The Fonts of the Fair. Both of these books are packed full of striking imagery, easy to follow tips and explanations.
Joby has been very open talking about his diagnosis of dyslexia in March this year and his books are written for anyone that likes to learn visually rather than reading pages of wordy theories. You can flick through the books easily and find something that sparks your attention.

Signwriting supplies and reference sheets
After the launch of Joby’s first book, Joby realised how useful people were finding the A-Z reference pages. He has since created A3 versions of each reference alphabet on quality satin finish paper. They feature each letter from A-Z shown as a technical drawing with construction lines and guides to help you recreate the lettering styles yourself. There are handy notes and observations from Joby annotated on the sheet which will help you observe the tiny details that will enable you to create hand painted letters to a high standard.
Each letter is 40mm high on the poster making the maths simpler if you are copying and scaling up. They make a useful workshop companion.
Posters are £5 each or buy 7 for £25.
Professional brushes and surfaces
One of the ways to save time as a signwriter is to paint lettering onto surfaces which are already prepped and ready to go. Joby sells pre-prepared signwriting boards in a range of colours. Just peel off the protective film and you’re ready to go. They can be easily marked out with a chinagraph pencil and then you can either copy lettering over or mark out your spacing and let the brush do the work. When you’ve finished painting these can be varnished to give a brilliant shine and make them weather proof.
For professional results you’ll need the right tools. Joby sells a range of professional signwriting brushes including his bespoke lining brushes which are custom made in the UK to his specification which includes a shorter handle to help with your grip.
Unique gifts for typographers and graphic designers
Theres a fair chance that anyone working to create letters digitally would have spent a lot of their youth doodling letters in their school books. While they might not be looking to trade their digital software for a brush and easel, they will appreciate the traditional craft of signwriting and the work that Joby and his team did to create 26 unique hand painted alphabets for All the Fonts of the Fair. They will enjoy ether of the two lettering jigsaws which feature a range of lettering styles inspired by fairground art.
A lovely Christmas day activity for any letter art lover.
Vibrant letter art for your workshop, office or home
Whether it’s their initial or a phrase that resonates with them, Joby’s fine art prints and hand painted letters are a unique piece of letter art to gift anyone who loves lettering.
Joby’s fine art prints start from just £15 and are available from A5 (ideal in a desktop frame) up to A3 for wall mounted art. All of his prints fit in frames that you can easily buy from High Street Retailers like John Lewis.
For an extra special gift why not choose a limited-edition print: only 50 prints have been made and each print is signed and numbered by Joby which adds to their collector’s value.
