The artwork began as a bit of fun, simply the word Welcome hastily brushed out for visitors arriving on one of Joby’s courses. But, true to form, he looked at the space around it and thought, What else can I add? Before long, the rest of the lettering was “chucked on” in his unmistakable style.
Painted in curveside and created at speed, the piece captures the authentic ethos of classic fairground art: bold, energetic and never meant to be scrutinised for too long. That spontaneity gives it a lively playful feel, one that has made the design a particularly popular print.
