Wall of Death
This fine art print features hand painted lettering which was drawn and painted by Joby Carter in his White Waltham workshop using traditional signwriting techniques. There are no computers or shortcuts used in Joby’s signwriting workshop!
Once complete, the artwork was then professionally scanned and then giclee printed on museum grade fine art paper (310 GSM) using lightfast inks, ready for you to display on your walls at home.
This print has not been digitally airbrushed, and you may see minor imperfections from the paint brush or varnish which are part of the authentic charm of hand painted lettering.
The overall paper size is A3 and will fit in standard A3 inch mounts or frames.

Joby says:
“The rich blood red with white lettering and black block were inspired by an enamel sign I saw. I liked the idea of using stark, crisp lettering and this is based on an alphabet called ‘Speedway’ which I created for my second book, All the Fonts of The Fair. The idea behind this lettering is to convey speed. The lettering style is an italic version of the Ship alphabet with serifs just on one side, the idea being that it was going too fast to be on the other side. I thought it would be fun to paint a sign using this alphabet to demonstrate how it could be interpreted.
There is a lot of romance and fascination with the Wall of Death stunt show which became popular in the 1930s and 1940s. It was a travelling slideshow found at fairgrounds featuring a motorcycle stuntmen and stuntwomen riding fast on a vertical wall where gravity holds them by the speed they ride. One Wall of Death sideshow even featured a lion riding in the sidecar!”
