The piece was inspired by a beautiful old enamel sign Joby once came across, echoing the same rich colours and classic layout. It was created using an alphabet font he had designed for his book All the Fonts of the Fair. Realising he hadn’t yet showcased the font in action, he painted it especially for the book, only to step back and think, That would make a great print. And now, it’s and eye-catching tea towel as well!
The Wall of Death itself is steeped in fairground history. It was an attraction that occasionally travelled with the famous Carters Vintage Steam Fair, a truly phenomenal spectacle where motorcyclists rode at full speed around vertical sides of a giant drum. Wild, noisy and utterly exhilarating, it was the sort of show that made the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.
