Token Alphabet
These hand painted letters were created for the fairground style alphabets which feature in Joby Carter’s book, All the Fonts of the Fair. This style of lettering known as ‘Token’ is a style of lettering which is designed to work nicely from the flow of a signwriters brush, making it a pleasure to paint.
Each letter is one of a kind and hand painted by Joby Carter using enamel paint on aluminium composite board. The final letters were varnished in house and will be dispatched flat in a protective cardboard wrap.
The overall size of the un-framed letter is 280mm x 201mm
These letters were originally available to buy with prices ranging from £80-£160 per letter.

“This is an alphabet which is a pleasure to paint: it’s designed to work nicely off the brush so the curves are smooth and pleasing to the eye. We used it to great effect on the token booth at Carters Steam Fair. In this version for the book I’ve blended two shades of red enamel paint on the face of the letters and light and dark green on the block with a blue shadow to give it extra standout and ‘lift’ from the background.”
