Howellphabet Alphabet
These hand painted letters were created for the fairground style alphabets which feature in Joby Carter’s book, All the Fonts of the Fair. This style of lettering known as ‘Howellphabet’ was inspired by the work of the famous fairground artist Sid Howell who painted fairground art in the 1930s.
Each letter is one of a kind and hand painted by Joby Carter using enamel paint on aluminium composite board. The final letters were varnished and framed in house and will be dispatched flat in a protective cardboard wrap.
The overall size of the framed letter is 233mm x 226mm x 12mm
These letters were originally available to buy with prices ranging from £100-£200 per letter.

Joby Carter says:
“This alphabet was inspired by the wonderful work of Sid Howell who was Chief Artist and Designer for the famous fairground ride makers Orton and Spooner in the 1930s. It’s a distinctive style with graceful thick and thins and lovely tapered, scalloped serifs. These letters have been designed to be crammed into a space so the serifs are shorter than you might see on other fonts. On these letters we’ve suggested a bevelled edge around the letter by using cream and green enamel paint blended together with a finger.
Sid Howell was creative with his letter styling: the crossbar of the S is quite high up, the N has a serif on the bottom right corner and the A has an unusual shape. The longer you look at the letters, the more you see.”
