Toffee Apple Alphabet
These hand painted letters were created for the fairground style alphabets which feature in Joby Carter’s book, All the Fonts of the Fair. This style of lettering known as ‘Toffee Apple’ was inspired by a beautiful piece of old signwriting by White Brothers who had a funfair on Barry Island in Wales in the 1920s. They were known for the ‘splendid appearance of their amusements’.
Each letter is one of a kind and hand painted by Joby Carter using enamel paint, silver paint, red flamboyant enamel paint and yellow flamboyant on aluminium composite board. The final letters were varnished and framed in house and will be dispatched flat in a protective cardboard wrap.
The overall size of the framed letter is 311mm x 311mm x 12mm

Joby Carter says:
“Letters like this are created in stages: you draw the basic letter first and then add the fishtails and flourishes. The bottom half of the letters has an ornament or the ‘trousers’ as I like to call it. This is painted to represent an acanthus leaf, a popular decorative theme for fairground artists at the turn of the century. I designed this based on glimpses of lettering from several old photographs which showed the words ‘White Bros’. I then reimagined the rest of the alphabet. In this example I’ve used silver paint and a coat of yellow flamboyant paint over the top to give it extra shine and depth.”
