Shooting Saloon Alphabet
These hand painted letters were created for the fairground style alphabets which feature in Joby Carter’s book, All the Fonts of the Fair. This style of lettering known as ‘Shooting Saloon’ was inspired by a style of lettering popular in Victorian times which I call ‘Playbill’ in my first my signwriting book. In this example I’ve added ‘fishtails’ to give it a fairground twist. Each letter is one of a kind and hand painted by Joby Carter using multiple colours of enamel paint on aluminium composite board. The final letters were varnished and will be dispatched flat in a protective cardboard wrap. These letters are not framed, they can be propped on a shelf in your workshop or office or you can drill holes in the corner to affix to a wall.
The overall size of the letter is 280x405mm
These letters were originally available with pricing ranging from £100 – £200 per letter.

Joby Carter says:
“This type of letter style would have started life as a printing font: letters would have been created from wood blocks of equal sizes which were designed to fit together neatly on a traditional printing press. The uniform width and depth meant that any letter could be slotted next to another one easily. Signwriters have played with this over the decades to create different decorative effects. People would associate the decorative flourishes I’ve added here with Western movies which were hugely popular at the turn of the century until the 1930s. The stars are also reminiscent of circus lettering..”
