Diamonds & Pearls Alphabet
These hand painted letters were created for the fairground style alphabets which feature in Joby Carter’s book, All the Fonts of the Fair. This style of lettering known as ‘Diamonds and Pearls’ was based on lettering created by Fred Fowle and the alphabet was reimagined by Aaron Stephens, fairground artist at Carters Steam Fair.
Each letter is one of a kind and hand painted by Aaron using enamel paint and silver paint, on aluminium composite board. The final letters were varnished and framed in house and will be dispatched flat in a protective cardboard wrap.
The overall size of the framed letter is 210mm x 215mm x 12mm
These letters were originally available to buy with prices ranging from £80-£160 per letter.

“This lettering was painted by Aaron Stephens based on the original Fred Fowle lettering on the front of our 1960s Lightning Skid Ride. Fred Fowle was often non-sensical with his lettering styles and in this example Aaron has given it a wide inset block which suggests it’s been cut out of the background and a drop shadow has been added which makes it look like the letter is floating above the background. The letters were created in multiple stages using enamel paints and silver paint.”
