Hoopla Alphabet
These hand painted letters were created for the fairground style alphabets which feature in Joby Carter’s book, All the Fonts of the Fair. This style of lettering known as ‘Hoopla’ is a classic British fairground style.
Each letter is one of a kind and hand painted by Joby Carter using enamel paint on aluminium composite board. The final letters were varnished in house and will be dispatched flat in a protective cardboard wrap.
The overall size of the un-framed letter is 280mm x 201mm
These letters were originally available to buy with prices ranging from £80-£160 per letter.

Joby Carter says:
“When people imagine traditional fairground lettering, this is often what they think of. The top half has fancy serifs and the bottom has fishtails in a different colour. When designing letters like this you have to choose colours carefully as the wrong combination can throw the balance off. I’ve not blended any of the colours on these letters, the shadow and highlight is suggested with simple brushstrokes and I’ve implied that the face of the letter is inset by painting a maroon block around the inside of an imagined outline.
Fans of Carters Steam Fair would have seen lettering very similar to this around the fair: on the gallopers rounding boards and on the Park Swings swingboats. I even used it on the album cover for Jools Holland Pianola, PIANO & FRIENDS.”
