Fairground Nouveau Alphabet

These hand painted letters were created for the fairground style alphabets which feature in Joby Carter’s book, All the Fonts of the Fair. This style of lettering known as ‘Fairground Nouveau’ was inspired by lettering created by fairground artist Fred Fowle and his apprentice Mark Gill.
Students on Joby’s traditional signwriting course rate this as the most popular lettering style to paint: these letters will be in high demand.
Each letter is one of a kind and hand painted by Joby Carter using three colours of enamel paint on aluminium composite board. The final letters were varnished and framed in house and will be dispatched flat in a protective cardboard wrap.
The overall size of the framed letter is 311mm x 311mm x 12mm.

“Of all the alphabets that were created for my book, All the Fonts of the Fair, Fairground Nouveau is possibly the alphabet I’m most proud of. It’s not over complicated but it’s crisp. My inspiration was the kind of lettering created by Fred Fowle and Mark Gill. This isn’t a copy of their work, it’s inspired by the flowing flourishes they often added to lettering. It lends a lot to Roman style of lettering but has wild flourishes: look at the flowing loops in the M and the W. This isn’t a copy and paste style of lettering as you’ll need to adapt letters and make decisions about where to add a flourish depending on the word you’re painting or to fit the space you’re working to. On my courses, Fairground Nouveau is the most popular style of lettering my signwriting students want to emulate so these letters will be highly sought after.”
