Bonnet Side Alphabet
These hand painted letters were created for the fairground style alphabets which feature in All the Fonts of the Fair. This style of lettering known as ‘Bonnet side’ can be found on the side of the vintage vehicles at Carters Steam Fair which was in turn inspired by the lettering styles found on railway carriages from the 19th century.
Each letter is one of a kind and hand painted by Joby Carter using enamel paint and gold leaf on aluminium composite board. The final letters were varnished and framed in house and will be dispatched flat in a protective cardboard wrap. The overall size of the framed letter is 311mm x 311mm x 12mm.
Pricing varies by letter and includes a signed certificate of authenticity and free UK delivery.

Joby Carter says:
“We’d used this style for numbers on our vintage vehicles but we wanted to develop it further and figure out lettering styles for the whole alphabet. If you study these letters, you’ll notice that the ‘light effect’ on the block is quite abstract. The signwriters on the railways would have been painting this type of lettering day in, day out and they would use the shadow and the face of the letter to tidy up the edges where the blend had been made.
To create this style, I first drew the letter without the block and shadow, then it was painted in a light colour as un undercoat. Next I drew and painted the block (using a brush to blend the colours). Then the shadow was added and gold leaf was used to cover the face of the letter. The final step was to varnish to seal the gold leaf.”
