Allsorts Alphabet
These hand painted letters were created for the fairground style alphabets which feature in Joby Carter’s book, All the Fonts of the Fair. This style of lettering known as ‘All Sorts’ was created by Aaron Stephens in the style of fairground artist Fred Fowle. They capture the essence of fairground lettering styles from the 1950s and 1960s.
Each letter is one of a kind and hand painted on aluminium composite board by Aaron using enamel paint, aluminum leaf, gold size and various shades of flamboyant paint over the top. The final letters were varnished and framed in house and will be dispatched flat in a protective cardboard wrap.
The overall size of the framed letter is 315mm x 315mm x 12mm.
These letters were originally available to buy with prices ranging from £150-£250 per letter.

“This is a version of one of Fred Fowle’s lettering styles, painted by Aaron Stephens, fairground artist at Carters Steam Fair. The letters are bonkers: there’s polka dots, diamonds and chequered patterns mixed together, all in a free and loose style. These letters are complex to create, and in many respects break a lot of the rules of lettering design but they are so full of joy! Aaron has used enamel paint, aluminum leaf and gold size, brown flamboyant (which was sprayed, just as Fred Fowle would have done at the time) and then various shades of flamboyant paint over the top. There are two ‘S’s in this alphabet: Fred Fowle would often use different versions of a letter in the same word to mix things up”
