Modern Games - Original Painted Sign

MODERN GAMES is a colourful piece of traditional fairground signwriting, painted on one of those classic shield shapes that would have been a familiar sight around the fair.

This particular piece of aluminium had been knocking around Joby's yard for a while and is far from perfect, which is all part of its character. Joby deliberately painted this one quickly and freely, trying to capture the spirit of traditional fairground lettering, which wasn't always painted with absolute precision. The lettering style itself is completely made up, with plenty of movement and personality.

The letters are finished in aluminium leaf with Amber Flamboyant painted over the top, creating a wonderfully changing, reflective effect. They're outlined in maroon with a block to the left, with small touches of black. There's also an internal block painted in Red Flamboyant, adding another layer of colour and detail.

The background is Carter's Cream with a soft pink border, finished with a fine contrasting line around the edge. A hand-painted star and sweeping flourishes fill the remaining space in true fairground fashion and bring the whole design together.

Painted on aluminium and measuring approximately 52 x 40 cm. Full of character and the spirit of old fairground signage, it already has holes drilled, ready to hang on the wall
