Waltzer Alphabet
These hand painted letters were created for the fairground style alphabets which feature in Joby Carter’s book, All the Fonts of the Fair. This style of lettering known as ‘Waltzer’ was inspired by lettering seen in a photograph of one of the first Waltzer rides.
Each letter is one of a kind and hand painted by Joby Carter using enamel paint, silver aluminium paint and yellow flamboyant paint over the top on aluminium composite board. The final letters were varnished and framed in house and will be dispatched flat in a protective cardboard wrap.
The overall size of the framed letter is 233mm x 233mm x 12mm.
Pricing varies by letter and includes a signed certificate of authenticity and free UK delivery.

Joby Carter says:
“The inspiration for Waltzer was a small black and white photo of a 1930s waltzer ride. We had a lot of fun reimagining the remaining letters of the alphabet! When the original fairground artist designed the lettering, they didn’t have a reference, they just made the one word up. The challenge of creating a full alphabet was really enjoyable and some letters were a real challenge. It’s stylised, geometric and painted on quite small panels which made it a more intricate job. The use of a compass was necessary, which in itself has created many challenges: the smaller the circle the less balanced the letter looks, so there was a bit of experimentation to create the desired final effect. The letters feature silver aluminium paint, with yellow flamboyant paint over the top. A very unusual style but one which catches the light and creates a strong visual effect.”
