New Ship Alphabet
These hand painted letters were created for the fairground style alphabets which feature in Joby Carter’s book, All the Fonts of the Fair. This style of lettering known as ‘New Ship’ was inspired by lettering on old Ship matchboxes. A different version of the alphabet was shared in Joby’s first book Signwriting Tips, Tricks and Inspiration. This version has been created in a different way with ‘perfect curves’ which follow lines created by using a compass or other round objects. Each letter is one of a kind and hand painted by Joby Carter using two tones of green and a two tone blended pink shadow enamel paint on aluminium composite board. The final letters were varnished and framed in house and will be dispatched flat in a protective cardboard wrap.
The overall size of the framed letter is 311mm x 311mm x 12mm.
Pricing varies by letter and includes a signed certificate of authenticity and free UK delivery.

Joby Carter says:
“This is a really crisp version of a style I use all the time with thick and thin that can be adapted in so many different ways. In this instance I’ve added a solid 45 degree two tone blended block in pink to help the letters stand out. On the face of the letters I’ve used a simple infill trick using a darker green to make them a little fancier. This type of decorative flourish was inspired by the fairground painter Charles Duffield who painted fairground art in the 1930s.
It’s not the most flamboyant lettering style in the book but it has proved really popular.”
