These hand painted alphabet letters were created for the fairground style alphabets which feature in All the Fonts of the Fair. This is a style of lettering known as ‘ Hope’ which can be found on the Steam Yachts at Carters Steam Fair, which were originally painted by signwriter Chris Hopes.
Each A-Z letter is one of a kind and hand painted by Joby Carter using enamel paint and gold leaf on aluminium composite board. The final letters were varnished and framed in house and will be dispatched flat in a protective cardboard wrap. Pricing varies by letter and includes free UK delivery.
The overall size of the framed letter is 311mm x 311mm x 12mm.
£200.00 – £300.00
Joby Carter says:
“I remember being about 8 or 9 and watching Chris Hopes paint the lettering BRITTANNIA and COLUMBIA on our Steam Yachts. It’s where my love of signwriting began – watching it go from nothing to something beautiful. I realised that you could make letters look pretty and I’ve been hooked ever since!
This is a complex three dimensional letter style. It was created over several stages including painting the basic letter shape, painting different colours then adding a gradient with a second coat, adding in the decorative flourishes, adding the block and gilding and varnishing it, adding shading to the block using oil paint mixed with varnish, adding the shadow and then the outlines.”
